Die Autoren interviewten Zeitzeugen und recherchierten in Archiven über dieses erste Leben der Angela Merkel. Sie belegen, dass die Bundeskanzlerin in ihren politischen Ehrgeiz nicht erst im Zuge der Wende entdeckte. Als Angehörige der sowjetisch geprägten Wissenschaftselite des SED-Staates war sie zielbewusst und system-konform. Unter dem Eindruck von Gorbatschows Glasnost und Perestroika trat sie dann als Reformkommunistin für einen demokratischen Sozialismus in einer eigenständigen DDR ein. Und doch war sie nur fünfzehn Monate nach dem Mauerfall Bundesministerin im wiedervereinigten kapitalistischen Deutschland.
Ralf Georg Reuth und Günter Lachmann zeigen, wie dieses erste Leben ihr zweites als CDU-Vorsitzende und Bundeskanzlerin mitbestimmt, bis heute.
