Im 2. Weltkrieg verliert Ella Baumann ihren Mann und ist danach mit ihren beiden Söhnen und dem Vater allein in ihrem kleinen Dorf im sächsischen Vogtland. In den 60er-Jahren flieht der ältere Sohn in die Bundesrepublik. Sein jüngerer Bruder wird ein erfolgreicher Ingenieur, heiratet und hat zwei Töchter. Zunehmend empfindet er das politische System als ungerecht und gerät in innere Widersprüche. Die politische Wende bringt neue Spannungen mit seinem Bruder im Westen.
